Critical-mineral prices rebounded, but the cycle is not one market

The IEA reports that aluminium, copper and tin prices rose by about one-third between January 2025 and April 2026. Lithium, cobalt, graphite and rare earths follow different supply chains.

The International Energy Agency reports that prices for aluminium, copper and tin rose by about one-third between January 2025 and April 2026, with copper reaching record highs in its measurement window. The move belongs to those metals and dates. It is not a single critical-minerals index that can be applied to lithium, cobalt, graphite or rare earths.

A price headline becomes useful after the product, exchange, grade, location and contract are named. A miner can sell into a strong global tape and receive a different realised price because quality, treatment, transport and provisional pricing sit between benchmark and cash.

Read the benchmark contract

Exchange prices usually refer to a defined metal, delivery location and specification. A physical producer may sell concentrate, intermediate material or another grade. The contract starts from a benchmark and applies treatment charges, refining charges, quality adjustments, freight and timing.

A quoted spot price is not the same as the monthly or quarterly average used on an invoice. Provisional pricing can leave the final amount open until a later observation period. The seller carries price exposure after shipment.

Currency matters. A dollar benchmark can rise while local-currency cost rises faster or slower. Export proceeds may be converted under local rules. Report benchmark movement and realised revenue separately.

Inventory timing can produce gains or losses that do not repeat. A trader holding material before a rise may report a strong period while replacement stock costs more.

Copper asks about mines and grids

Copper demand spans power networks, buildings, electronics and transport. Supply responds through existing mine output, expansions, new projects, scrap and substitution. New mines can take years to permit, finance and build.

Ore grade and mine complexity affect cost. Smelter capacity and treatment charges can move even when the refined metal price rises. A producer of concentrate and a producer of cathode experience different margins.

African copper projects also face power and corridor constraints. A high benchmark does not move product through a congested border or restore a failed grid. It can fund investment if companies retain cash and believe the price supports the asset over its life.

Consumers should examine copper content, supplier contracts and the ability to redesign. Buying excess inventory after a rally can lock in a peak; running too lean can stop production.

Cobalt asks about joint supply

Much cobalt is produced alongside copper or nickel. Supply can respond to economics of the primary metal rather than cobalt price alone. A cobalt decline may not close a copper mine that earns its return elsewhere.

Product form and responsible-sourcing requirements affect market access. Traceability, labour and environmental controls have cost and can influence the buyer pool. A benchmark does not price every compliance condition.

Battery chemistry can change cobalt intensity. That affects demand over time without eliminating near-term contracts. Separate technology scenarios from confirmed purchasing.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo's supply position makes policy and operating events material to the market, but one country total still contains mines with different costs and products.

Lithium asks about conversion capacity

Lithium markets include concentrate and several chemicals with quality specifications. Mine output, conversion plants and qualified battery supply do not expand on the same schedule.

Prices fell sharply before the 2025-to-2026 base-metal rebound described by the IEA. It would be inaccurate to infer the copper move for lithium. Check the current lithium series and product before making a claim.

A project announcement can use a long-term demand case while current prices weaken its financing. Investors should test cash under contract, downside and ramp-up assumptions. Resource size does not provide conversion yield or customer qualification.

Recycling and chemistry influence future supply-demand balance, but their timing remains scenario-dependent.

Graphite and rare earths ask about processing

Natural graphite value depends on flake, purity, shaping, coating and qualification. A mine price and anode-material price refer to different stages. Synthetic graphite adds another route with its own energy and feedstock.

Rare earth elements occur together and require difficult separation. Market value can concentrate in selected elements while a project produces a mixed basket. Processing knowledge and environmental management are central.

Export restrictions can move prices and accelerate efforts to diversify. The IEA's 2026 outlook warns about supply concentration and export controls. A restriction may support a competing project and increase its equipment or reagent cost through wider trade effects.

Do not group these materials because policy documents call all of them critical.

Build a company exposure sheet

For a producer, list saleable product, reference price, payable percentage, deductions, currency, observation period, volume and cost curve. Show how a 10% benchmark move reaches cash under the contract. Ten percent is a planning scenario, not a forecast.

For a buyer, list mineral content by product, direct and indirect suppliers, contract reset, inventory cover and approved substitutes. Many firms buy components rather than metals and need supplier transparency to locate exposure.

For a government, separate royalty, corporate tax, dividends and export receipts. Their timing and price sensitivity differ. A windfall claim needs realised production and fiscal terms.

The next release needs mineral columns

Track supply additions, project delays, inventories, demand sectors and policy by mineral. Add product form and geography. A combined chart can introduce the subject and cannot decide an investment.

The IEA's reported rebound is evidence that selected base-metal conditions tightened in its period. It also highlights concentration and investment risk. The disciplined response is more disaggregation, not a declaration that every critical mineral entered the same bull market.
