What a central-bank rate change does to a business loan

A policy-rate decision changes one input to bank funding. The loan payment moves through its reference rate, margin, reset date, fees and lender discretion under the contract.

The World Bank and IMF describe tighter financial conditions among the risks facing Sub-Saharan African economies in 2026. A central bank can raise or lower a policy rate inside that environment. A borrower's instalment changes only through the loan contract and lender's funding economics.

Read the facility letter before the macro commentary.

Find the rate clause

Identify fixed or variable rate. For a variable facility, record reference, margin, floor, cap, reset frequency, observation date and notice.

A bank's base rate can be set by the bank rather than the central bank. The contract should explain publication and change. A money-market reference follows another method.

Fixed can mean fixed for a period and reset later. Introductory rates can expire. Record every date.

Fees based on balance or limit can change effective cost without the nominal rate.

Calculate the current payment

Use outstanding principal, remaining term, repayment pattern and current rate. Amortising, bullet, overdraft and revolving facilities respond differently.

Ask the lender for a cash schedule and reproduce it. Confirm day count, compounding and treatment of weekends.

A one-percentage-point rate increase does not always raise payment by one percent. Effect depends on principal, term and structure.

Include tax on interest or fees where applicable and professionally confirmed.

Trace the policy route

Policy rates influence short-term funding, deposit pricing, market yields and expectations. Banks fund themselves through different mixes and manage liquidity and capital.

Pass-through can be delayed and partial. A bank with stable low-cost deposits may move differently from one using expensive wholesale funds.

Credit risk and competition affect margin. A lender can reprice new loans while an existing fixed facility stays unchanged.

Regional outlooks cannot determine one bank's timing. Use its published rate and contract notice.

Separate reference and margin

A loan can be reference plus a fixed credit margin. The reference moves with market conditions; the margin reflects borrower and product terms.

Some contracts permit margin review after covenant breach, risk change or renewal. Read those events. A policy cut may be offset by a higher credit margin under lawful terms.

Negotiation should address both. Stronger security, information or cash performance can affect margin without changing policy.

A floor can prevent the borrower receiving a full rate decline. A cap limits rise if enforceable and not expired.

Put reset dates on cash flow

A policy decision today may reach the facility at next monthly, quarterly or annual reset. The bank may use a reference observed before the payment period.

Show payment before and after reset in the 13-week cash forecast. A company with several loans needs a maturity and reset ladder.

Customer prices may reset later than debt. That timing gap can compress cash even when annual margins recover.

Foreign-currency debt follows its reference and currency. Local policy can affect exchange conditions without setting the foreign rate.

Check deposits and working capital

Higher rates can increase interest earned on deposits and the cost of borrowing. A company may hold restricted cash at one yield and borrow at a much higher one.

Customers can pay later when their finance tightens, increasing receivables. Suppliers can shorten terms. The indirect working-capital effect can exceed the loan change.

Demand may slow in rate-sensitive sectors. A debt model should stress revenue and collection, not interest alone.

Inventory financed through overdraft becomes more expensive by day. Improve turnover before cutting stock that protects production.

Prepare lender questions

Ask for the exact reference, current value, next reset, margin, all fees, payment under defined rate cases, prepayment cost and refinancing options.

Obtain answers in writing. A relationship manager's estimate is not a contract amendment.

Compare refinancing on total cash and security, including setup and early repayment. A lower headline rate can cost more over a short remaining term.

Do not refinance floating debt into foreign currency solely for a lower coupon without modeling exchange risk.

Report the exposure

The board page should show outstanding principal, fixed or variable share, references, margins, reset dates, maturity, currency and security. Add payment under approved rate cases.

State which rates are market observations and which are scenarios. Do not predict a central-bank decision as fact.

A policy-rate headline is a prompt to inspect the file. The clause and reset date decide when it reaches company cash.

A cash example without a forecast

Suppose a company has a variable facility with 10 million outstanding and interest paid monthly. A one-percentage-point annual rate increase adds about 100,000 of annual simple interest before compounding, fees, amortisation and day-count effects. Dividing by 12 gives about 8,333 per month as a rough planning amount. This is an illustrative calculation, not a quote from a lender.

The real schedule can differ because principal falls, the reset occurs mid-period or the contract applies another method. Replace the example with the lender's cash schedule. Then run cases at rates chosen by the board and compare the payment with monthly operating cash.

A small percentage can be material near a cash minimum and immaterial beside a delayed customer. Put both on the same forecast.
